What is a soft-flame lighter?

A soft-flame lighter produces a yellow, teardrop-shaped diffusion flame. The flame is not pressurized — fuel vapor mixes with air at the flame front. This is the most common lighter type and includes both disposable and refillable designs.

Ignition works in one of two ways:

  • Flint-and-wheel: a small serrated wheel is spun with the thumb against a flint (a small rod of ferrocerium), creating sparks that ignite the butane. This is the mechanism used in most disposable lighters and many classic refillable lighters.

Because the fuel is liquid and the reservoir is not sealed, Zippos can lose fuel to evaporation when not used frequently.

How does butane refilling work?

Refilling a butane lighter involves pressing a butane canister onto the fill valve on the lighter’s base. The process:

  1. Turn the flame adjustment to the lowest setting (if the lighter has one).
  2. Hold the lighter upside down so the fill valve faces up.
  3. Press the nozzle of a butane refill canister into the fill valve and push down. Hold for 5–10 seconds. The butane transfers from the pressurized canister into the lighter’s fuel reservoir.
  4. Wait 1–2 minutes after filling before igniting, to allow the butane to stabilize and any excess air to dissipate.
  5. Readjust the flame height.

Butane refill canisters are sold at tobacconists, hardware stores, and online. Different lighter brands may ship with different nozzle adapters for the fill valve — many butane canisters include a set of adapter tips to fit various valves.

What about matches?

Matches produce flame through a chemical reaction. A match head is coated with an oxidizing compound (typically potassium chlorate) and a fuel (usually sulfur or antimony trisulfide). When struck against a friction surface (on strike-anywhere matches, the friction surface contains red phosphorus; on safety matches, the red phosphorus is on the matchbox striker strip, not the match head), the friction generates enough heat to ignite the chemical mixture.

Matches are single-use. They are available as book matches (small, folded cardboard with a striker strip) or as boxed wooden or wax-coated stick matches. In the context of pipe use, longer wooden matches are sometimes preferred because they allow the flame to be held over the bowl long enough to light the tobacco evenly.
