How does a grinder work?

A grinder consists of two halves that fit together. The inside face of each half has a set of pointed or diamond-shaped teeth. When the two halves are closed and rotated in opposite directions, the teeth interlock and shear the material between them, breaking it into smaller pieces.

This design separates ground material from the teeth, making it easier to access and less wasteful. The hole size in the grinding chamber floor determines the grind fineness — material must be small enough to fall through.

4-piece grinder (grinding chamber + collection chamber + kief screen + catch)

A 4-piece grinder has the same grinding and collection chambers as a 3-piece, plus an additional fine-mesh screen at the bottom of the collection chamber and a bottom catch compartment beneath it. As ground material sits in the collection chamber, the finest particles (sometimes called kief or pollen — the very fine, powdery residue from dry plant material) pass through the screen and collect in the bottom catch.

The 4-piece design is the most fully featured configuration. It provides three levels of separation: unground material (stays in the teeth), ground material (collection chamber), and fine particles (bottom catch).

What materials are grinders made from?

Metal (aluminum or zinc alloy)

How to use a grinder

  1. Remove the lid (top piece). Place a pinch of loose material on top of the teeth in the grinding chamber. Do not overfill — leave room for the teeth to interlock when the lid is closed.
  2. Replace the lid. Rotate the two halves in opposite directions — typically 10–15 back-and-forth rotations, until you feel less resistance (indicating the material has been broken down).
  3. Open the grinder. On a 2-piece, the ground material is between the teeth. On a 3-piece or 4-piece, unscrew the collection chamber to access the ground material.

How to clean a grinder

Residue builds up on the teeth and screen over time, reducing grinding efficiency. To clean a metal grinder: disassemble all pieces, soak them in isopropyl alcohol for 15–30 minutes, then scrub the teeth and screen with a stiff brush (an old toothbrush works). Rinse, dry completely, and reassemble. Do not soak acrylic grinders in alcohol — it can crack the plastic. Instead, use warm soapy water and a brush.
