Bowl
The bowl is the cup-shaped chamber where tobacco is loaded and burned. It is open at the top for loading and lighting. The inside of the bowl is called the tobacco chamber. Bowl size varies — a larger chamber holds more tobacco and burns longer; a smaller chamber holds less and burns shorter. Over time, a layer of carbon residue (called “cake”) builds up on the inside walls of the bowl as a natural byproduct of burning tobacco.
Shank
The shank is the horizontal extension that connects the bowl to the stem. Inside the shank is the airway — the passage through which smoke travels from the bottom of the bowl toward the mouthpiece. At the end of the shank, opposite the bowl, is the mortise — a cylindrical socket into which the stem’s tenon fits.
Mortise and tenon
The mortise is the socket at the end of the shank. The tenon is the cylindrical plug at the end of the stem that inserts into the mortise. Together they form a friction fit that holds the stem in the pipe and creates a continuous airway from the bowl through the shank and stem to the mouthpiece. Pipes designed to accept filters (typically 9 mm or 6 mm) have a wider bore in this area to accommodate the filter between the tenon and the bowl.
Stem (mouthpiece)
The stem is the part of the pipe that extends from the shank to the mouth. It contains a narrow airway (the smoke channel) through which the user draws. The far end of the stem — the part held between the teeth or lips — is called the bit. Most stems are made from vulcanite (vulcanized hard rubber) or acrylic (Lucite). Vulcanite is a traditional material that can oxidize over time, developing a greenish or brownish discoloration; acrylic does not oxidize.
Bit (lip)
The bit is the very end of the stem — the thin, flattened section that sits between the teeth. The smoke exits through a narrow slot or opening in the bit. Bit shapes vary: a saddle bit has a flat underside, while a tapered bit narrows to a rounded end. The shape affects how the pipe feels in the mouth but does not change how the pipe functions.

What are pipes made of?
Briar
Briar is the most common material for modern tobacco pipes. The wood comes from the root burl (the burl nodule growing between the root and the trunk) of the tree heath, Erica arborea, a shrub-like tree native to the Mediterranean region. Briar burls grow underground, absorbing minerals and moisture from the soil over decades — most commercially harvested burls are from plants 30 years old or more.

Meerschaum
Meerschaum is a mineral — hydrated magnesium silicate (chemical formula Mg₄Si₆O₁₅(OH)₂·6H₂O), also known by its mineralogical name sepiolite. It is mined primarily in the Eskisehir province of Turkey. The mineral is soft when first extracted and can be carved into detailed shapes. It hardens as it dries.
Meerschaum pipes are typically hand-carved from a single block of the mineral. The material is naturally porous, lightweight, and heat-resistant. Over time and with use, meerschaum pipes develop a color change — the white mineral gradually darkens to amber and eventually brown, an effect caused by tobacco oils being absorbed into the porous surface.
Corncob
Corncob pipes are made from dried, hollowed-out corn cobs. The cob is shaped on a lathe, allowed to dry, and often coated or treated to improve durability. A shank (typically wood or plastic) is inserted into the base of the cob, and a separate stem is fitted.
Missouri Meerschaum Company, based in Washington, Missouri, is the most widely known manufacturer of corncob pipes and has been producing them since 1869, according to the company’s own documentation. Corncob pipes are lighter and less expensive than briar or meerschaum. They are considered functional but less durable — the cob material eventually chars and deteriorates with repeated use.
Clay
Clay pipes are made from fired clay (ceramic). They are the oldest type of European tobacco pipe, dating to the 16th century. Traditional clay pipes are unglazed, thin-walled, and fragile. They are made in one piece — bowl, shank, and stem — without a removable mouthpiece.
Clay conducts heat readily, so the bowl and stem become hot during use. The material does not absorb flavors or moisture, which means each bowl delivers a neutral taste. Clay pipes are inexpensive but break easily.

What are the common pipe shapes?
Pipe shapes are traditionally categorized by the curvature and proportions of the bowl and shank. The two broadest categories are straight (the shank extends in a straight line from the bowl) and bent (the shank or stem curves downward). Within these categories, named shapes include:
- Billiard: straight shank, cylindrical bowl, roughly equal bowl height and shank length. The most common and recognizable pipe shape.
- Dublin: similar to a billiard but with a conical bowl that tapers toward the base.
- Apple: rounded, apple-shaped bowl with a shorter shank.
- Bent (various): the shank and/or stem curves downward. Full-bent pipes have a pronounced curve; half-bent is more moderate. Bent pipes hang naturally from the mouth.
